Hathern Old v BOTWCC 2nd XI
Saturday 22nd July 2006 - Hathern
Not a lot to say here folks, it was a short game to say the least. Hence a short match report to follow...
Stand in skipper John Shipman lost the toss and Burton were put in to bat on a soft, damp pitch that looked much more favourable to the bowlers. Typical Shipman, one shot at responsibility and he blew it.
However, the Burton batters took little notice of the lousy conditions (its rarely anything else at this ground) and simply played all that was bowled at them. Which wasn't a lot truthfully.
Perhaps the Hathern bowling attack had got used to the hard and fast pitches of recent weeks and maybe chose not to adjust their game for a pitch with no bounce or life at all, as far too may balls delivered (not including by Adey Rush of course) pitched too near to the center of the track and were dispatched to all parts by both Mike Tagg, Ali Love (on season debut) who departed for 6 after being caught out at mid off and the returning Mark Russell.
Yes, Mark Russell. You remember him? He's the bloke who played at the start of the season and hit a few runs before going into some kind of anti-cricket stasis for 6 weeks. Still it was good to see the lad back though and in the form of his life, continuing exactly where he left off.
The match lasted a mere 21.5 overs thanks to the arrival of Hurricane Hubbard and by the time the pitch was several inches under water and both captains agreed that any further activity was off the cards, messers Tagg and Russell ended on 36 and 52 not out a-piece respectively. Inlcuding the 11 extras Burton were 105 for 1.
A good knock by both and a real shame that the weather had to intervene, as the Burton boys were playing well and were very confident of turning this average Hathern side over.
Che cera cera, such is life and etc.
Match abandoned and 5 points each it is then.
Next week at home to Walton. Hmm. There's a few people looking forward to that one. No doubt Hayes will bring a ringer or two in to aid his desperate cause.
