Broughton Astley v BOTWCC 2nd XI

Saturday 19th August 2006 - Broughton Astley

This match really could have been a corker. Top of the table versus third. Burton were only two points behind Hinckley in the second place promotion spot and had a game in hand over them. With two games this weekend Burton could have been very close to top of the league.

First things first though, the skipper got himself into the spirit of things in the usual way and lost the toss on a day we really could have done with winning it. Not surprisingly Broughton Astley (hereafter known as BA) chose to field on this soft track that had seen much rain over the last week.

Tagg and Russell took to the crease as usual and only 13 runs were added before Taggy fell in what was to be an unhappy weekend for him, to a catch off Murgatroyd for just 3.

Our ringer from the clubs Elite XI, Ian Lang was next in and all looked good there too until he too was tempted to hoyke one out of the ground and got himself bowled like and Second XI number 11. Young Ali Love, fresh from his hols was next up and he showed some real promise, timing the ball well and playing shots with confidence in a partnership of 80 with the indomitable Russell, who finally fell for 72. A figure sure to help his averages out after the last two week's weaker efforts of just 28 and 15. (More runs than I'll score this season, or is it?).

Young Sam Shipman enjoyed a very short innings and amazingly made it to the crease despite being on holiday but sadly got himself out for a duck, first ball and was then replaced by the in-form Rob Morley. He had a little go but he too fell short of recent weeks sessions, being stumped on 15.

One of the days surprises (and there are a few) came to the crease next, Kelvin Creasey. He'd waited for months for a bat and when finally given that chance two weeks ago at Hinckley, blew it in royal fashion. But today was quite different. After a few wild swings and elaborate misses, he began to time the ball well and suitably dispatched anything lose to its corresponding boundary and ending his innings on 32 from 30 ball, a rare 100+ strike rate for anyone this year.

He was followed by Steve Neal who showed some composure and understood that any of the aforementioned wild swinging was really not called for, being on 159 for 6 with only 5.1 overs remaining. Shane Marshall didn't agree though and had a good slap at a couple before he fell for 10 with one ball remaining bringing Penton to the crease at number 10. At least we couldn't be bowled all out with Jack Child still left at number 11.

Another of the days surprises came next when Penton, with his one ball to face and a current average of zero from 3 innings, aimed an unpleasant looking slap at a short one for the last ball and actually connected. Yes, it went towards cow corner, but it was at least on the ground and a single run was taken. 1 not out for Penton and a much more useful 15 not out for Steve Neal, who finally hit more runs that his average expected.

Burton ended their 45 overs on a fairly healthy and defendable 196 for 8.

Post teas, Ian Lang and Grant Penton took the cherry and bowled well for a short while. Few runs were given for the first 7 or 8 overs until one of the BA batters had a slog at Penton and hit him for 16 off one over. And that was the end of his bowling for the day. Lang carried on in his usual dogged way and was eventually rewarded when the opener D Holliday gloved to keeper Creasey for the first wicket.

Shane Marshall came on for Penton and here's when the fun started for BA. This was perhaps the loosest 4 overs we have ever seen at the club for a while and he went for 51 runs for none off his 4 overs. End of his bowling too.

By this stage BA were now in much more confident form and runs had started to pile up. Jack Child had other ideas though, coming on for Lang and immediately clean bowling the other opener.

Rob Morley came on to bowl to replace the erratic Marshall, who then sulked for the rest of the day on the boundary.

Both he and Jack Child really began to turn the screw with perhaps the tightest 10 overs we could have expected. BA had previously been hitting runs quite freely after having been gifted so many opportunities to score earlier on in the game. Scoring was now scarce and even though BA had once looked like they might knock the 196 off with overs to spare, a few things happened and the match turned very quickly.

Rob tempted BA batsman K Measures to chip one down the throat of Penton standing a square leg (another of the days surprise moments) and them Jack Child got the LBW of a quite uncinvincing batsmen a couple of overs later.

Suddenly, the BA number three, L Wesson, who was steadily steering the team to a sure victory, shut up shop. Clearly BA had used all their batsmen and were protecting their wickets. Wesson, of course should not have been there having put a ball right down the throat of Ian Lang at long-on, but the First teamer put it to ground, where it was probably easier to have caught it. (Wazzock).

Burton could now sniff victory and with some more very useful bowling from Morley and Child a win was clearly in sight.

But then the heavens opened. The fact that the BA batters were very keen to go off highlighted their lack of depth in this area and they perhaps did not have the confidence to go through and get the 60 runs needed for a win.

And the rain didn't stop.

And the match was abandoned.

Bugger it! Only 13 overs left to play too!

Still, having batted first, it was a very useful 15 points to Burton, but sadly 10 to BA too.

Oi vey, there's always tomorrow. At home to The Waltons.
