BOTWCC 2nd XI v Braunstone Cricketers

Saturday 28th July 2007

After last week’s wash out where not a ball in the whole of Leicestershire Senior League was bowled, the seconds were entertaining Braunstone CC at home.

Skipper, Capnrob, went out and won the toss yet again and decided to bowl on a drying track. The cherry being given to Dawson and Penton.

The two openers kept some tight lines and discipline with Dawson getting the breakthrough in the sixth over.

Penton kept up some serious disciplined bowling with no rank long hops for the first time in his Burton career, ending with a spell of 11 over’s, 5 maidens for a meager 7 runs.

Enter young Tom Shipman with some spin bowling which was a mixture of four good balls and a couple of dubious ones, although a catch straight down the throat of Russell was spilled on his behalf.

Capnrob took over from Penton and bowled a tight spell of 8 over’s for 5 runs and clean bowled the Braunstone opener in his 3rd over.

Having a blower, Capnrob brings on the lad of the match, young Sam Shipman who is raising the bar in every game he has played this summer. The two shipman boys now bowling in tandem. It was not to be his day with the ball however, but later with the bat was another story.

By now the Braunstone boys were cashing in and getting a few runs as the pitch didn't seem to offer much to the two young spinners, so Capnrob had to bring himself back into the attack and try to stem the flow of runs, which seems to be the trend in recent games.

Burton couldn’t ask for better as Capnrob in his first over back bowls a treble wicket maiden and ending his twelve over’s 4-16 runs. Vintage stuff indeed.

Down at the other end Steve Layzell, still full of paella and tortillas from a recent jaunt to Spain, was a bit rusty and the Braunstone boys, with wickets in hand and not many runs on the board, targeted him and knocked him for 30 runs off six over’s. There were threats of a jaunt to the local gymnasium from Steve. Watch this space.

The first innings of Braunstone ended on 138 for 6.

Well, it’s the turn of the Burton boys to bat. Out go Russell and Dawson.

And back came the out-of-form Russell, clean bowled for 1 after four over’s.

Enter Sonny Warne. Two of the youngest Burton boys taking on the best of Braunstone bowling and both were like seasoned veterans, rattling up boundaries with some beautiful stroke play. The next wicket falling at 59 young Warne who by now thought every ball should go out of the park, and holing out at point for a well earned 33 runs.

Stenning went in at four creaming some nice balls of the middle of the bat but seemed to pick out all the fielders and then Mr. Runner-Out himself runs out the well-set batsman, Dawson, for 31 runs who looked set for his first 50 of the summer.

Enter the Burton veteran Mr Mike Tagg, who at first seemed to struggle against some good Braunstone spin bowling.

Stenning finally gets to play over a straight one and watched his leg stump topple, bringing in the skipper Capnrob who lasted just 5 balls for 1 run.

Enter Creasey, who lasted about the same but fails to trouble the scorer. The Burton boys look like they’re about to make a right pigs ear of things at 89 for 5 needing 49 of about 15 overs.

But out steps Sam Shipman. Him and Taggie start to repair the damage and then someone lights tag blue touch paper and shots flow from the bat. Not to be out-done, the young gun Sam Shipman joins the party slowly they get to 137 to tie the game and Tagg gets himself bowled out.

Well, out goes the youngest gun of the team, Tom Shipman, at 13 to join his big bro. They have a chat in the center of the wicket and big bro tells young Tom to bat out the last ball of the over and he was going to hit the winning run in the next.

There was no chance of this happening. Tom cheekily pushes the ball into cover and the game was won!

i'm sure there was some pay back after Sam had bowled out the last wicket in the last game to deprive Tom of a bowl.

Well done everyone great team effort and spirit.
