Newbold Verdon 2nd XI v BOTWCC First XI

This week saw Burton visiting Newbold Verdon’s Alan’s Way Recreation ground to face a young team struggling to find form.
Burton’s skipper, Rob Dunn, won the toss and asked Newbold to set a target. Their openers set off briskly, scoring at a rate of 5 an over for the first few overs, mainly off Child who was suffering with a bruised foot. Smith, at the other end however, resumed his tight line from last week. But it took until the fifteenth over before Smith made the breakthrough by having the hard-hitting Bird caught behind with the score on 40. At this stage the Newbold run rate had been reduced to less than 3 and was never to get any higher for the rest of the innings. Child was replaced in the attack by Dunn, who maintained the pressure. It took only two more overs before Smith was back in the wickets by luring the Newbold captain, Wykes, into an injudicious swipe to present another gift for the wicketkeeper, Moore. Dunn then got into the act and steadily he removed six of the Newbold batsmen to bring their innings to an end with 109 on the board for the loss of nine wickets in their 45 overs. Dunn’s final figures were 15-6-32-6.
Burton’s reply commenced with Moore and Simmons facing a young attack and scoring steadily until Moore was bowled in the sixth over. The rate was maintained above 3 by Simmons and his new partner, Fisher, who dominated the scoring. After fourteen overs of a pace attack, Newbold skipper switched to an all spin attack, but the wicket offered them no assistance and Burton continued to score steadily. It was not until the 25th over that Hand appealed successfully for LBW against Simmons. The second dubious such decision in the match. Meanwhile Fisher was playing a selection of shots to all parts of the ground and reached a much deserved 50 in the 29th over. Fisher was joined by Dunn to bring the total to within four of the target when Dunn hoisted one to the long on boundary and watched as a very athletic Finn took the catch. It was left to Fisher and Freestone to reach the target without further loss. No champagne moments but a satisfying victory leaves Burton looking forward to the next match. Fisher finished on 58 not out.
