BOTWCC 2nd XI v Thornton St Peters
Saturday 31st May 2008
The Burton Second's did not fair well. And this week they have no-one to blame but themselves.
Fielding first against the League leaders, the Burton bowlers, to a man, bowled far too short and wayward on a soft and very slow pitch, and were consequently punished for it. Only 2 bowlers managed to get their name in the book, John Shipman with 2 wickets and his oldest offspring (Sam) with 1. The only other wickets fell to run outs. The visitors posted 219 easy runs for 6 wickets. Not very good at all.
The Burton response really should have been better, especially given that they had hit over 200 runs 3 times in the season so far. A win was still a feasible possibility, but the batsmen performed in the same slap-dash manner as the fielding/ bowling and wickets fell from a early stage. Timing was poor and shot selection even more so.
Truthfully, little came from the innings, barring 3 brave attempts from the Burton youth. Sonny Warne (21), Sam Shipman (16) and Ed Everitt Stewart (13) each batted well but with the rest of the team dropping like flies, the match was well beyond the Burton Two's. It was nice to see Rich Stenning (11) back in the team though. Lets hope we see more of him this year.
And so it came to be, that in the 34th over, the innings was wrapped up and we all went home.
Truthfully, we should ALL be ashamed of ourselves. We really need to tighten up our game and offer a genuine challenge to our opposition. This match and last week's against Appleby Magna could easily have been wins but for our poor commitment in the field and with the bat. We are much better than this!
Let's sharpen it up lads and come back next week at Hathern with a win.
