Stoke Golding v BOTWCC 1st XI

Burton put Stoke Golding to the sword

After two weeks without a game due to last week’s appalling weather, Burton travelled into Warwickshire to face a Stoke Golding team positioned just below them in the Division 1 table. Games against Stoke Golding have always been close encounters and both teams were looking forward to another chance to grab the spoils.

Burton’s skipper, Dave Freestone, lost the toss and was asked by Stoke Golding to bat first. On a very hard wicket, which proved to contribute to a few downfalls amongst the batting fraternity, the opening pair of Moore and Deabill made steady, but untroubled progress against the Stoke attack. The pitch made itself felt first in the 19th over when a ball from the Stoke captain Guy Rollins, hit Moore on the arm and leapt up into his face. Moore, along with his blood and spectacles, fell to the floor with every player on the field running to his aid. Fortunately, after some remedial first aid, Gary retired hurt and allowed Simmons to the crease. The score now stood at 51 for 0. Deabill and Simmons continued progress until the 27th over when Simmons became the first of Rollins’ victims. The score was 81 for 1.  At this point Moore returned to continue his innings, but clearly still shaken for his injury he was next to go four overs later having only added a further 2 runs to his total. Meanwhile Deabill doggedly continued to thwart the Stoke attack’s attempts to remove him, hitting a four and a glorious maximum in one over off the bowling of Willets. Sadly the pitch got the better of him when he was bowled when on 47 in the 33rd over. Burton made heavy work of scoring but finished their 45 overs on 145 for 6. It was felt that this target was probably 30 or so short of ideal for such a wicket.

Stoke found scoring on this pitch equally difficult, amassing a total of only 4 in the first 7 overs from 2 scoring strokes and having lost one opener already. This was due to some fine, accurate bowling from both ends by Lee Smith and Ian Lang. Only two Stoke batsmen managed to reach double figures and they finally capitulated in the 33rd over with their score on 58. Smith and Lang’s very impressive performances resulted with Smith finishing with figures of 13 – 4 - 25 – 3 and Lang with the superlative result of 15 – 8 – 13 – 6. Child picked up the other wicket. This was one of those matches that produced a tremendous team performance which clubmen will remember for many a year.
