BOTWCC 1st XI v Whetstone
Saturday 5th July 2008
With the weather looking to play a part in the match, Burton entertained Whetstone at the Towles Fields ground on Saturday. Although the Whetstone team are currently at the foot of division 1, past encounters between these two teams have always resulted in closely contested games. This game followed the same pattern.
Once again, Burton lost the toss and was asked to set the target on a pitch described by the visitors as “very soggy”, following the morning rain. Burton’s opening pair of Deabill and Moore realised immediately that big scores were not likely to feature as they struggled to get the ball away. Moore was bowled in the seventh over but Deabill proved that a steady approach was necessary to overcome the tidy bowling of Modi and Kotecha who both continued unchanged until the 30th over. At this stage Burton had amassed 60 for the loss of 4 wickets. The struggle to score continued with only four batsmen reaching double figures but Deabill was still there and continued resolutely to thwart all Whetstone’s attempts to remove him. The innings finished at the end of 43rd over with Burton’s total having reached 129. Deabill had carried his bat and finished on a very creditable 53 not out.
Burton’s opening bowlers Lang and Smith needed to produce spells similar to last week’s performance when they accumulated 9 wickets. Lang was into his stride immediately and secured his first victim in the 5th over. Smith meanwhile could not find last week’s magic and was replaced with Child after bowling just 5 overs without any success. Lang continued to torment the Whetstone batsmen and finished another excellent 15 over spell with a four wicket haul for the expense of just 25 runs. At the other end Child dismissed one and then Dunn came on to account for four more. It was left to Smith, returning to replace Lang at the other end, to seal a victory and offer Paul Blount the opportunity to provide the champagne moment of the match. Bridgewater, a young up and coming find for Whetstone, who had been playing some fine shots, decided to cut Smith over gully. Blount leapt up and plucked the ball out of the air with one hand. A fine climax to a close game with Whetstone all out for 109 in 38.3 overs.
