BOTWCC 1st XI v Appleby Magna
Saturday 16th August 2008
After six wins on the trot, Burton on the Wolds 1st XI entertained top of the table Appleby Magna
at Towles Fields on Saturday looking to continue the excellent run. Unfortunately, Burton lost the
toss and were asked to bat first. The innings did not get off to a good start with Moore losing his wicket in the fourth over.
Deabill
and Dunn steadied the ship but runs were hard to come by from youthful, enthusiastic and accurate
bowling from the Appleby attack. Only Deabill (38) and Freestone (18) managed to break into double
figures before Neal (30 no) and Aylett (15 no) produced an unbeaten partnership of 47 for the seventh
wicket. Burton finished their 45 overs on 140 for 6.
Appleby’s reply could not have started more badly with their opener being bowled off the first ball
of the innings by Smith. The Appleby batsmen seemed intent on scoring only boundaries as first Robey
and then Hughes found the rope to bring the score to 12 at the start of the third over.
But Smith had other ideas and removed Robey’s off stump. But Lang at the other end was having a
lmuch less enjoyable afternoon with boundaries coming from most of his overs. Appleby looked to
be cruising to an achievable target until captain Dunn brought himself and Aylett into the attack. The effect was remarkable. After 15 overs Appleby had amassed 63 for 3, but another fifteen overs
saw the score rise to only 83 for 4. Child joined the attack and maintained a tight grip on the
scoring and with first Aylett and then the return of Smith continued to take wickets at a steady rate.
But both teams still believed they could win until the 41st over when Appleby lost their eighth
wicket and clearly decided to take any runs on offer but throw out the anchor. The game finished
with Appleby on 133 for 8. A good result for Burton although a win would have produced a few more
points towards that elusive promotion spot.
