Hathern v BOTWCC 1st XI
Saturday 23rd August 2008
At this stage of a season, teams at either end of their divisions tend to focus more keenly than ever on producing a win. This was exactly the situation at the Pasture Lane ground in Hathern when Burton on the Wolds First XI was entertained by the home side, Hathern Old. Hathern found themselves holding second spot in Division 1 with Burton just 10 points behind them in third place. Everything suggested this would be a closely fought encounter, but the reality was far more one-sided.
Hathern won the toss and elected to bowl. Burton started brightly with Moore and Deabill both finding the boundary until Deabill perished in the fifth over. This event brought Dunn to the crease, who eased himself into what was to become the innings of the season for Burton’s elite. Moore and then Blount went relatively cheaply but then Freestone joined Dunn to produce a partnership of 109 for the fourth wicket, both playing some fine shots to all parts. It was during this partnership that Dunn reached his 50 off 74 ball. Hathern also suffered the loss of a player at this phase of the game when Wybraniec, fielding at deep mid off, fell and dislocated his shoulder while retrieving a ball. By the time Freestone (27) departed Dunn had reached 95. He had to watch two more team mates depart before he reached his century off 118 balls. Dunn continued to torment Hathern and looked to finish not out. But trying to squeeze a final boundary off the last ball of the innings he was bowled. Burton finished on 227 for 8 with Dunn having reached a splendid 132.
Hathern openers Hollier and Swift took to the challenge immediately with some fine shots off the opening attack of Smith and Lang. But with the scre on 45 Lang rearranged Hollier’s stumps. Swift, though, continued to score briskly off all bowlers and reached his half century off 57 balls. A change of bowling brought Child into the attack. After receiving his share of Swift’s treatment, Child bowled him in his fourth over. Coles, Murdoch and Dewick added 26, 11 and 31 respectively but the asking rate was increasing all the time with Aylett working his way through Hathern’s tail end. The Hathern innings was concluded when Dewick was bowled in the 36th over with the score on 168. Aylett was the star bowler with figures of 5.2 – 0 – 20 – 5.
With three matches remaining before the end of the season Burton are now in second spot. Those matches will be very keenly contested by every Burton player.
