BOTWCC 2nd XI v Braunstone

Saturday 16th August 2008

The Twos did not fair well, sadly. It was a match of great significance and could even have lead to a promotion place with a win. Regrettably, we choked.

After a reasonable start in the field, the Two's disappointingly allowed an average Braunstone side reach 176 runs in their 45 overs through a mix of poor fielding, wayward bowling, too many extras and dropped catches. Little else could be said on the session other than "must do better".

The reply wasn't going well either, as wickets tumbled from the very first over. And continued to do so. And then some. They fell to some mediocre bowling and bails were rattled from tame straight balls that could have been easily fended or played. Sadly, at one stage we were 80 odd for 8 and staring down the barrel of an embarrassing defeat.

Still, thanks to some fine and gritty batting from Tom Shipman, John Shipman and Adam Archer, the match got very interesting. The funs began to dissipate though when Shippo Senior ran out Adam Archer and Penton entered the game. All looked bleak. But with some careful shots and 'strike-farming' Shippo got the Two's to within 3 runs of the win. Unfortunately, the aforementioned number 11 misread a shot into mid-wicket and ran himself out. Nearly game over.

It didn't end that easily though. Penton was unsure as to whether he was out or not, Kelvin as umpire could not see the event as the fielder had impeded his view of the run-out and after some high pitched squealing from Braunstone skipper, Burtons own leader intervened from the sidelines and urged a decision to be made. Him saying that it looked out from the clubhouse. Penton walked and the match was lost. As was the season.

What a happy ending to 2008, eh?

Match report by Grant (sorry shippo) Penton

"In some ways our worst performance of the season - but we almost grabbed victory. Bad luck Tom, Adam, Grant & particularly John - you nearly rescued us."

Mark Russell
