BOTWCC 1st XI v Westonians
Saturday 10th May 2008
Burton’s opponents this week were Westonians, relegated from the premier Division last season with a point to prove. Burton skipper Rob Dunn won the toss and chose to allow Westonians to set Burton a target. This they did with a flourish, the openers having 15 runs on the board at the end of the second over. However, the wickets began to fall with Ian Lang taking the first four leaving Westonians with 68 on the board, but still maintaining a run rate of over 4 an over. Unfortunately, ‘Flash’ Blount resulted in fracturing a finger whilst fielding and had to be taken to hospital leaving Burton with ten men. With a change of bowling Hood and Dunn brought the rate down accompanied with a steady loss of wickets. Hood finished with 5 for 19 off 10.4 overs and left Westonians on 147 all out at the start of the final over.
Burton made a steady start but faced some accurate bowling and were always below the asking rate. Deabill (32) and Dunn (39) made spirited attempts to keep the scoreboard rolling, but a steady loss of wickets, including three run outs, in the chase for runs left Burton still requiring 32 from the final wicket with Blount still at hospital. Lang was run out with Burton 25 short. Once again, Burton failing to reach a modest target.
