Taverners v BOTWCC 1st XI

This Saturday, Burton visited Leicester Taverners at their Aylestone ground with the intent of turning last week’s unexpected defeat into an isolated event.
On a cold and damp afternoon Burton’s skipper, Rob Dunn, won the toss and asked Taverners to set a target. This they started to do against an opening attack of Lang and Child. With the score on 36 and both openers having settled in comfortably Child secured his first victim by re-arranging his stumps at the end of the 14th over. Three balls later communication breakdown hit the Taverners when both batsmen found themselves in the same crease with Shipman senior hurling the ball accurately at Moore to remove the bails at the far end. Taverners then faced the next 30 balls without adding to the score. They managed to add a single before Child, now bowling a consistent line and length, persuaded the unfortunate Milson to dolly a relatively simple catch to Simmons. Taverners continued their innings against the very miserly attack of Child (32-2) and Dunn (48-2). With Child having completed his allotted 15 overs Shipman senior continued the accurate bowling. Taverners ended their innings on 130 for 7.
Burton’s reply commenced emphatically with 10 on the board by the end of the first over. Moore and Deabill made batting look relatively easy against a very docile bowling attack. It was Moore who took the game to Taverners reaching 50 in just 63 balls. It wasn’t until the 35th over with the score on 118 that Deabill (26) uncharacteristically hoisted one directly into the grateful arms of the long on fielder. Moore and his new companion, Simmons reached the target in the 38th over with Moore on an unbeaten 89. The whole team performed well in producing a thoroughly deserved victory. Apart from the cold, it was a delight to watch.
