BOTWCC First XI v Hinckley

Saturday 24th May 2008

A last ball thriller was played at Burton on the Wolds’ Towles Fields ground on Saturday in the Senior League’s Division One game against Hinckley First XI.
Hinckley won the toss and asked Burton to bat first on a sunny but very windy afternoon.
Burton’s openers Moore and Deabill made a good start but failed to get a run on the board until the third over. However, they both scored steadily against some mundane bowling until the thirteenth over when Moore clipped a high ball to point for a comfortable catch with the score on 43. Deabill and Simmons continued to score steadily until with the score on 85 in the 24th over Simmons edged a ball from Beasley to the keeper. This brought Dunn to the crease and produced the biggest partnership of the match. Dunn, a busy player, immediately started to take quick singles and turn them into twos and threes with some glorious shots to all parts of the ground. Deabill also continued to progress his innings well reaching his 50 having faced 105 balls. But Deabill perished going for a run that Dunn thought was not there, departing on 53. Freestone came and went only surviving 4 balls. A further three wicket fell before the innings ended with Burton having amassed a creditable 187 in their 45 overs with Dunn unbeaten on 62.
Hinckley, always able to bat all the way down the order, started well with the opening pair reaching 30 off the first 10 overs, only scoring off the few bad balls delivered by the unusual pairing of Smith and Hood. Smith’s pace caused the batsmen problems all afternoon and it was not long before he was amongst the wickets when Meats clipped a rising ball to Deabill in the gully. Smith continued to torment Hinckley and succeeded in removing five of their top batsmen by the end of his 15 over spell for a very economical 38 runs. But the torment continued as Dunn and Lang continued to pressurise the remaining batsmen. It was only a belligerent innings of 63 from 50 balls by Hall that kept Hinckley in sight of a victory. Ably assisted by a dogged innings by Blockley, the pair added 53 for their partnership. Then, when Blockley dollied one to Blount at short mid on Hall continued the onslaught with Hinckley’s number nine, Tipping. This produced another worthy partnership of 36 for the eighth wicket in the 44th over. At this point Hinckley needed 12 runs from 9 balls with just 2 wickets remaining and Hall still at the wicket. But some thoughtful, determined bowling by Lang produced Hall’s demise. With just six balls remaining Hall swatted Lang’s first ball to the deep cover boundary, where Dunn was poised waiting for his opportunity. He took it cleanly. With their last pair at the wicket, Hinckley needed 10 from 5 balls. Lang bowled splendidly under the pressure, but his penultimate ball was lofted into the pavilion by the tail-ender. So, with one ball to come, Hinckley needed four runs for victory whilst Burton needed one wicket for victory. A game of cricket could not get much more exciting. Lang’s final ball was full length and in line. The batsman could do nothing but stop it from hitting his wicket and a great game resulted in a 3 run winning draw for Burton.
