Burton continue to struggle against the high-flyers in the Premier Division and so it proved again when Huncote CC came a visiting on Saturday.

Burton won the toss and decided to ask Huncote to set a target. Openers Ian Crossley and James Swann scored steadily until Swann swatted a ball to Brian Fisher at short mid on in the 17th over. Crossley perished just two overs later having reached 74. Both wickets were taken by Rob Dunn, who finished with 40 for 2.  Things started to look better for Burton with two more wickets falling relatively cheaply in just another four overs with the score on 112. This time it was Geoff Aylett causing the damage (53-2). But then Tim and Pete Kirby came together and added exactly one hundred runs for the fifth wicket in the 42nd over before Tim was caught off the bowling of 75 year old club president, Barry Moore. Barry followed this by removing the other Kirby in his next over, finishing his spell with 29 for 2. Huncote’s final score was a very fine 241 for 6.

Burton struggled to score from some accurate bowling. Gary Moore (7) was first to depart with just 10 on the board. Wickets continued to fall regularly at one end whilst Ross Deabill (30) defied all attempts to remove him until he was given LBW to become the seventh wicket to fall. Only Ian Lang (14) and a belligerent knock of three shots from Chris Langham for 16 managed to reach double figures. The now inevitable early finish arrived in the 37th over with Burton all out for 97.

Next week Burton travel to the far reaches of Appleby Magna where previous encounters have always been closely fought.
