Makers Edge Taverners v BOTWCC 2nd XI

Saturday 13th May 2009

Real men against boys stuff here today with the usual problem of not enough runs scored being the problem. Not to suggest that the bowlers would have gotten the home team out, but with nothing to defend the chances of anything less than a less are slim.

The METs opening bowling was a mixture of pacey, experienced and accurate and the BOTWCC Twos had little to offer in response. A few bright sparks fizzled into existence for a while though. Custard got another half score of 25 and Tomski showed no fear for his 18. Other than that, and stand in skipper Mark Russell's 13, nobody got over 10. In fact 4 bats went for either 0 or 1. Not good enough against any opposition let alone a team as solid as Makers Edge Taverners. We were all out for 88.

The second innings didn't go too well either. Opening bowlers Will Jones and Grunter had a go. Young Will was punished for a few wayward balls and Penton was his usual inexpensive self. Jones was eventually replaced by Sam Shippo with immediate results. He'd bowled well for the first few balls then dropped one short and leg side. The batsmen had a happy swipe at it, only to see it fall into the gloves on Custard behind the pins. Penton replied at the other end and took the other opening bat who'd clearly gotten fed up playing no shots and dabbled one to Sonny Warne in the covers.

And that was pretty much it. The positive aspect of taking wickets only served to bite us on the bum, as MET just sent in some better batsmen. And by the 17th over it was all done courtesy of a square cut to the point boundary. MET won by 8 wickets.

Next week, another tough match at Towles Fields against Appleby Magna.
