Burton’s first venture into the Premier division of the Leicestershire Cricket League proved too much of a challenge in their match against Leicester Caribbean. The visitors amassed a fine total of 217 for 8 in their 45 overs having been asked to bat. Burton then struggled against some good bowling to leave Caribbeans with a victory by 159 runs.

Burton’s opening bowling attack of Smith and Aylett were put to the sword from the first over. By the time Aylett bagged his first wicket, Caribbeans had already accumulated 66 runs in just 8 overs. Aylett got his second wicket 4 overs later but the score had increased to 85. The next wicket, also by Aylett, Came in the 20th over with Caribbeans continuing to move ahead at 109. Scoring continued at a healthy rate for Caribbeans but wickets were also falling regularly. However it was not until the 40th over before opening batsman Durant was bowled by John Shipman having reached a fine century in the 33rd over in just 110 balls including 17 fours and one six. He was out on 118 having gained the man of the match award. Caribbeans reached 217 in their 45 overs.

In reply Burton’s openers of Deabill and Moore started well with Deabill cracking two fine boundaries in the very long (10 deliver) first over. But three overs later Moore was bowled. Wickets continued to fall regularly with only Deabill presenting any resistance to the bowling attack.  He perished in the 18th over and the remainder of Burton’s side followed in just another ten overs.

Not a good start to the season for Burton, but players will be pulling themselves together during the week ready to face Wigston Town next Saturday.
