On a warm and sunny Saturday, Burton travelled to high flyers Wigston at the start of the second half of the Senior League Premier season.
Vice captain, Dave Freestone, standing in for the absent skipper, won the toss and decided to bat first to see what sort of target the Burton boys could set for their hosts. Things did not start well when Gary Moore (2) was caught behind in the fourth over. At the other end, Ross Deabill was finding it very difficult to get bat on ball and succeeded in achieving a new club record for facing 54 balls before managing to get off the mark. Mike Simmons came and went without troubling the scorers, Geoff Aylett (15) made a brief, but bright, appearance and Paul Blount (7) remained for about the same time. The middle order collapse was reigned in a little by Dave Freestone (18), but it was the partnership of Ian Lang (39 NO) and Malc Hood (11) which took Burton from 83 for 7 to 126 for 8 and gave the Burton bowlers a score to defend. Burton ended their 45 overs with 131 for 8.
Wigston’s openers set off scoring steadily and relatively easily against the Burton bowling attack of Lee Smith (31 for 0) and Ian Lang (33 for 1). It wasn’t until the 12th over before Ian made the breakthrough. But the fall of that wicket brought Steve Brooks (61 NO) to the crease, who promptly and efficiently despatched balls to all corners of the ground in his quest to reach the target without further loss. That was not to be as pace changed to spin and Malc Hood, with his fifth ball had Hensman, the Wigston skipper, caught behind for 30. Sadly for Burton there was to be no more bowling success and the modest target was achieved by Wigston half way through the 33rd over.
Next week Broughton Astley will be the visitors to Towles Fields when Burton will be looking for their first ‘double’ of the season.
