Woodhouse Eaves, without their student power, came to Burton on Saturday aiming to maintain their champion chasing position in the Senior League Premiership.

Burton are now getting very proficient at winning the toss and so it proved again. They decided, against such high flying opposition, to aim for as many batting points as possible and set the target.

Gary Moore (13) clipped the first ball of the match to the fine leg boundary, but runs were hard to come by with Woodhouse’s bowling attack being consistently very accurate. Ali Love (5) made a brisk start looking for runs but had his wickets rearranged before three overs had been bowled. Wickets then began to tumble every few overs. After Gary departed in the 9th over Rob Dunn (10), Paul Blount (7), Ross Deabill (1), Simon Harper (6), Ian Lang (4), Lee Smith (5) and Tom Shipman (0) followed one another out to the wicket and back to the pavilion with runs coming very slowly, leaving the score far away from the batting point threshold of 100. The ninth wicket fell when Tom was run out at the end of the 32nd over with the score having reached 86. Dave Freestone (39 no) was joined by his last possible partner, Jack Child (5). Some determined defence by Jack and some inspirational shots by Dave managed to drag the score beyond that elusive threshold before Jack’s defence failed him in the 40th over with the score on 108.

Woodhouse soon provided Burton’s players with a demonstration of how to bat. By the time Woodhouse’s only wicket to fall that afternoon came in the tenth over when Sam Skeet (13) was caught, the score was already on 49. Brett Collins (78 no) and Nick Collins (16 no) only stuttered when two very high soaring catches were dropped and continued until they reached their target after just 17.2 overs. The rather sad bowling statistics for Burton read Lee Smith (26 for 0), Ian Lang (41 for 1), Tom Shipman (9 for 0) and Jack Child (34 for 0).

Next week Burton travel to fellow strugglers Twycross in search of more relegation-saving points.
