After their baptism of fire in the Premier Division of the Leicestershire Senior League last week, Burton on the Wolds were looking for a better performance against last season’s strugglers, Wigston Town. Unfortunately once again, Burton found life in the top flight too high a step-up to achieve victory.
It didn’t start well when Wigston won the toss and asked Burton to set a target. It took Burton three overs before they managed to score. The lack of runs continued throughout the innings, but wickets continued to tumble regularly. Only Simmons (21) and Neal (16) managed to reach double figures before Burton found their innings ended at 72 all out in the final of the 45 overs, having failed to score any contribution in 19 of those overs.
Burton’s opening bowling attack of Lang (9-3-24-2) and Aylett (7-3-14-1) kept some faint hopes alive but Wigston reached their rather meagre target in the 25th over for the loss of 4 wickets. But Burton’s bowlers should take heart in that of the six Wigston batsmen that took to the field, only two reached double figures, Helmn (29 NO) and skipper Hensman (13 NO).
Next week Burton travel to Broughton Astley where previous encounters have always been close.
