With a team much depleted due to holidays, family commitments and the ridiculously early start of the football season Burton welcomed Newbold Verdon to Towles Fields on Saturday in their latest attempt to avoid relegation from the Senior League Premier League. With many normal players in such short supply Burton’s aim was simply to attempt to attain as many points as possible when faced with such a high ranking team as Newbold Verdon.

Having lost the toss and asked to bat first, Burton welcomed the opportunity to achieve as many double points as possible. Their inning started well with openers Gary Moore (11) and Geoff Aylett (24) putting on 21 runs for the first wicket when Gary was caught trying to push the score along. A further 20 runs were added for the second wicket of Rob Dunn (5). The team then crumbled away until they were all out for only 78 in the 39th over. If it weren’t for John Shipman (20) who plundered 18 runs from just 5 balls, Burton’s total was heading for an all time first XI low.

Burton’s bowlers didn’t fare any better when Newbold’s openers reached the crease. The first wicket didn’t fall until 45 was on the scoreboard and although young Dean Neal bagged his first ever wicket in the Premier division with the total on 69 it wasn’t long before Newbold had achieved their target in the 19th over. So, maximum points for Newbold, but no points for Burton. Burton used 6 bowlers: Rob Dunn (18 for 0), Tom Shipman (10 for 0), John Shipman (13 for 1), Adam Morris (25 for 0), Dean Neal (6 for 1) and Barry Moore (8 for 0).

Next weekend sees a busy Burton travelling first to Huncote on Saturday and then to Bharat Sports on Sunday to see if those two bottom places in the Premier division can be avoided.
