BOTWCC 2nd XI v M.E. Taverners

Saturday 15th August

Ok, so this was pretty much always going to be a one sided affair, but hey, what had we got to lose?

Having actually WON a toss and electing to field, a very under strength Burton 2nd XI took to the field and had a go at the League's top team.

With only 2 regular bowlers in Grunter and Rich Langham, keeping runs down to a minimum was a tough ask, but, all that aside, we stuck at it and despite being punished for EVERY loose ball that was delivered, we still managed to take a healthy 8 MET wickets before they declared on 211 after 38 overs. (Stats below).

The usual Burton reply was inevitable and as we were hurtling towards another painful defeat with 52 overs to defend and a score of 60 for 6 after 16 overs, a bit of a stand by the aforementioned bowlers started to annoy the MET bowling attack. With Rich batting for about 25 overs for his 29 not out and Grunter for 17 overs for his 10, PLUS a personal best from Deano for his late 11 runs (no matter what shots he chose to pull out of his repertoire) METS were probably getting a bit nervous that we would manage to force a draw from the clutches of certain defeat.

Not so, of course. After some dogged bowling, the Two's were all out for 122. Sounds bad, but having been staring down the barrel of the usual pre-80 ten wickets collapse, some pride was restored.

A heavy defeat yes, but we should be proud of 11 players who turned out in difficult circumstances and battled against a very good METs Team.
