After their comprehensive defeat at the hands of Huncote yesterday, Burton travelled to Bharat Sports on Sunday in an attempt to salvage some dignity from the weekend. But once again, with a patchwork quilt of a team due to holidays, two matches in the weekend and the inevitable family commitments, it was to be a tall order. And so it proved.
Once again, Burton lost the toss and were asked to bat first. Things did not get off to the best of starts for Burton when Dave Freestone (0) misjudged a ball and was caught at mid on in the second over. Paul Blount (17) and Mike Simmons (10) made a valiant attempt to push the innings along, but found runs very hard to come by. When Mike was caught in the 21st over the partnership had managed to accumulate only 34 runs. But then the inevitable Burton collapse started with only Tom Shipman (23) showing any form of defence by attacking the bowling until he also was bowled in the 34th over. The innings ended soon after with Burton having reached a very modest 73 in the 36th over.
By the time tea was taken after ten overs of Bharat’s reply, the openers had added an unbeaten 41 runs. Bharat only required a further four overs to reach their target without loss. Burton’s sad bowling figures were Ian Lang (22 for 0), Rob Dunn (12 for 0), Rich Langham (17 for 0) and Grant Penton (21 for 0).
A very poor weekend for Burton with two comprehensive losses and only a few points to add to their relegation-avoidance tally. Unfortunately, the holidays and the football will continue to wreak havoc with Burton’s chances next week when they entertain Appleby Magna at home.
