Gary Moore's 107 Not Out Wagon Wheel

Gary Moore's 107 Not Out

Following last weekend’s very poor performances, Burton on the Wolds first XI were looking forward to this Saturday’s encounter against Appleby Magna at Towles Fields when results have always been close and very competitive. But Burton are still struggling to field a team while members of the normal squad are off holidaying and preferring the spectator sport of watching football rather than helping their team-mates secure a result.

Appleby won the toss and asked Burton to bat first. Within three overs this seemed to be a very good decision when Burton found themselves a wicket down with just 3 on the board. It got worse for Burton two overs later when the second wicket fell. Paul Blount joined Gary Moore and whilst Paul dropped anchor, Gary continued to add runs at a steady rate. Gary and paul continued their partnership until the 22nd over when Paul took a rising ball just above his left eyebrow and was forced to retire hurt on 12. This brought Dave Freestone to the wicket, who joined Gary in keeping the scoreboard ticking over at around four an over until Dave holed out on 24. Geoff Aylett (14) made a brief appearance before Paul returned to continue his innings with Gary. It was during this second spell of their partnership that Gary achieved a feat that no Burton player had come anywhere near to during the season by scoring a magnificent century in 130 balls including 13 fours. Paul was finally out for 22 leaving Gary to finish the innings with Steve Neal. Burton amassed 182 for 5 in their 45 overs with gary Moore finishing on 107 not out.

One would have thought that such a total was easily defendable, but here the weakness of the team was highlighted with the lack of bowling prowess. With just two regular first XI bowlers to hand it fell to Rib Dunn (38 for 1) and Malc Hood (24 for 1) to restrict the flow of runs scored and take wickets from a side renowned for its depth of batting. And so it proved, with Appleby reaching the target in the 42nd over for the loss of only three wickets. At least Burton came form the field of play having achieved maximum batting points.

Next week Burton travel to Syston for the return match against Leuva Patidar, where a double is on the cards, providing Burton can field their bowlers!
