Leuva Patida First XI vs Burton on the Wolds First XI at Syston Sat 29 August 2009
Burton and Leuva have spent the whole season vying to avoid the relegation zone. With just three weeks to the end of the season and Burton currently below Leuva, it was imperative for Burton to gain the advantage from this game.
Burton won the toss and asked Leuva to bat first. The game started well for Burton as Ian Lang (39 for 2) took his first scalp with the fourth ball of the day. The second wicket fell to Lee Smith (33 for 3) with the first ball of the fourth over with the score on 3. Lee continued to bowl very economically throughout his 12 overs, leaving Leuva struggling to make a big score. Dhiru and Raj Patel strived to a partnership of 60 for the fifth wicket but once they had both been dismissed in consecutive overs the rest of the Leuva batsmen found it extremely difficult to get the ball off the square from the bowling of Rob Dunn (39 for 3), Sam Shipman (23 for 1) and Tom Shipman (2 for 1). Leuva were finally bowled out at the start of the 45th over with 140 on the board., the last three overs being maidens.
Burton openers Gary Moore (8) and Geoff Aylett (24) got Burton off on the chase having amassed 31 before Gary was bowled. Two overs later Geoff, playing some lovely shots, perished trying to flight one over midwicket. Rob Dunn (45) and Ross Deabill (12) added 44 for the third wicket before Ross was needlessly run out attempting a quick single. Wickets continued to fall: Paul Blount for a measured 15, Dave Freestone for a brief 3 and Steve Neal for a squeaky 12, but it was left to Ian Lang (8 not out) to see Burton safely home in the 42nd over.
With two games remaining, Burton will be seeking to bag as many points as possible to avoid that relegation spot....
