With just two games to go before the end of the season and with the relegation zone continuing to present a threat, Burton welcomed Bharat Sports to Towles Fields for the last home game. With the proximity of relegation Burton players had decided to attain as many points as possible. Even a few bonus batting and bowling points could be enough to lift Burton above their nearest rivals Leuva Patida, who only have one game to play.

Burton lost the toss and were asked to bat first. Gary Moore (10) and Dave Freestone (14) made an enthusiastic start scoring at 4 runs aan over until Gary was caught with the score on 30 in the eighth over and then three balls later Dave perished. Geoff Aylett and Rob Dunn (4) took up the reins and continued to score at 4 an over until Rob chipped one to point with the score on 49.  Geoff was joined by Paul Blount (17) to produce the partnership of the innings, adding a further 54 runs before Geoff was caught having just reached a much deserved half century. Wickets now continued to fall regularly with all remaining batsmen scoring only single figures before Lee Smith dollied a catch to mid off to bring the innings to a close in the 42nd over with Burton’s score reaching 140.

Bharat scored freely from the off and reached their target for the loss of just three wickets in twenty eight overs. Burton’s bowlers were Lee Smith (19 for 0), Ian Lang (21 for 0), Malc Hood (40 for 2), Rob Dunn (32 for 1), John Shipman (19 for 0) and Tim Shipman (9 for 0).

But the most important statistics of the afternoon were the bonus points that Burton gained in the process of losing the game. Having batted first their batting points were doubled, giving them a valuable four points and an additional bowling point for that third wicket, a total of five points.

On Sunday, Burton’s rivals in the relegation contest, Leuva Patida, travelled to Woodhouse Eaves for their last match of the season. Leuva could only manage 108 all out which Woodhouse achieved for the loss of 3 wickets. This left Leuva gaining only three bonus points, one point below Burton’s total. So, Burton have avoided the drop back in to Division 1 and will travel to Leicester Caribbeans next Saturday for the final game of the season safe in the knowledge that whatever the outcome there will be more adventures in the Premier Division to look forward to in 2010.
