With the looming threat of relegation having disappeared and a lovely late summer afternoon beckoning Burton on the Wolds First XI travelled eagerly to Leicester Caribbean’s ground on Saturday looking forward to a good game of cricket with all the pressures of league status removed. And so it proved, with the highest scoring match of the season.

Burton won the toss and chose to bat first. Mike Simmons (20) and Mark Russell (24) opened proceedings with Mike stroking the first ball to the cover point boundary.
Caribbeans had struggled to make a team and it showed as the rusty bowlers went through their paces delivering tame balls to be hit away. Scoring at over five an over Burton continued to pile on the runs until first Mark and then Mike departed with a score of 77 in the 15th over. Rob Dunn was joined at the crease by a succession of players: Geoff Aylett (16), Paul Blount (10), Dan Headley (9), Ian Lang (10), Malc Hood (0) and Sam Shipman (27), who contributed and supported Rob in his fine innings of 131 not out in just 117 balls including 13 fours and three sixes. At the end of the innings Burton had amassed 259 for 8.

But Caribbeans are renowned for their batting prowess and took to their task with relish. Ian Lang (61 for 1) and Tom Shipman (25 for 1) opened the bowling for Burton and it was young Tom in his first over who uprooted the middle stump of Caribbeans’ opener, Porter, with just 5 on the board. But then a couple of defiant innings with some fine stroke play by both Khan (59) and Galloway (61) began to loosen Burton’s grip on the game. A fine spell of controlled spin bowling from Malc Hood (47 for 1) off 12 overs stemmed the flow of runs ably supported by Ian, Sam Shipman (22 for 0), Rob Dunn (35 for 3) and James Headley (31 for 1) and a fine run out by Geoff Aylett. Caribbeans can bat right down the order, and the game remained in the balance until the penultimate over. At that point Caribbeans looked the favourites to win with three wickets remaining and just 21 required. But in their haste for runs two batsmen perished, leaving the last two batsmen needing 14 runs from just six balls. Burton skipper, Rob Dunn duly delivered those six balls from which Caribbeans could muster just two singles.

A fine end to a terrific first season for Burton in the Premier Division. Players dispersed looking forward to the Presentation evening in October, winter nets starting in January and the 2010 season in April.
