After losing their two opening matches of the season, both played at home, Burton travelled to Broughton Astley expecting another keen contest. Indeed the game was a very close one made even more so by a poor pitch and some strange decisions by the officials. But Burton gained their first win after an extremely thrilling finish.
Broughton won the toss and decided to bat first. Burton’s opening bowling attack of Lang (18-3) and Smith (19-0) maintained a tight stranglehold on the Broughton score until both openers had been removed by Lang with the score on 10 after just six overs. Tingle and D’Araujo added a further 34 runs before D’Araujo became the first dubious LBW decision of the day, but bringing Lang his third wicket in the 18th over. It was not long before the new attack of Aylett (29-2) and Dunn (22-4) were also amongst the wickets. All bowlers were very ably assisted by some fine wicket keeping by Gary Moore who accounted for four catches and a stumping. One of the catches was from the faintest of tickles by the bat of Ross Blockley, who immediately tucked his bat under his arm and walked in the true spirit of the game, not waiting for the umpire’s decision. A 9th wicket stand of 21 frustrated Burton for a while, but Broughton’s innings was finally over in the 40th over with the score having reached 95.
Burton’s batsmen then tried their best to donate wickets to Broughton with some shoddy running between wickets accounting for three pointless run outs, particularly as the scoring rate was ticking along sweetly towards the modest target. When Aylett was out LBW, to a ball that clearly wasn’t, for the 7th wicket with the score on only 54, it looked as if Burton were about to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. But Lang (27) and Hood (16NO) played some lusty blows to add 34 for the 8th wicket until Lang perished in the 41st over with victory now so near with the score on 88. Shipman only lasted 3 balls but added a precious 4 to the score before Hood guided a fine shot to the square leg boundary to bring the points home for Burton with just the final wicket in the bag.
With renewed confidence Burton entertain Birstall Village at Towles Fields next week.
