Following their first win last week, Burton looked to consolidate this week when their visitors were Birstall Village. Once again, Burton’s game plan was put to the sword by a very strong Birstall batting side.

Birstall won the toss and decided to field. Burton’s openers Gary Moore (10) and Ross Deabill (42) made a steady start before Gary had a rush of blood and took a dodgy single that proved too far and he was duly run out for the second time in as many weeks. Mike Simmons (6) fell next to the only LBW of the day but scoring was drying up for Burton. Geoff Aylett (9) attempted to boost the runs but perished quickly. Some lusty blows from birthday boy Paul Blount (35) with Deabill moved things along until Deabill lost his stumps. In came Ian Lang (19) who followed on from last week and maintained the momentum with Blount, until first Blount and then Lang succeeded in finding a safe pair of hands. Burton’s innings was completed by Sam Shipman (4) and Malc Hood (1) without further loss having reached a total of 136 in their 45 overs.

Burton was now looking for a spirited bowling attack from their usual candidates. But first Smith and Lang failed to stem the tide of runs flowing from the Birstall batsmen and a similar pattern continued with the three Shipmans, Aylett and Hood. Birstall’s openers Andy Galpin and Josh Saye reached the target with 63 and 66 respectively in the 30th over.

Next week Burton travel to Woodhouse Eaves striving to find form against a team who are riding high.
