Burton travelled to near neighbour Woodhouse Eaves on Saturday looking to give a good account of themselves against a side riding high in the Premier division.

Burton has yet to win a toss this season and this match continued the theme. Woodhouse asked Burton to bat. Once again, Burton’s openers Gary Moore (22) and Mike Simmons (5) made a slow but steady start before Mike was bowled in the tenth over. This brought skipper Rob Dunn to the wicket determined to show a captain’s innings. Rob scored his team’s first half century of the season, but watched helplessly as six of his team returned to the pavilion with only Ian Lang (21) managing double figures. Rob was bowled when on 53 with the Burton score having crept to 134 in the final over.

Burton looked to its bowlers to make inroads into a very strong Woodhouse batting line up. Certainly, the first two overs proved very encouraging for Burton with Lee Smith (25-0) starting with an eventful maiden and Ian Lang (38-1) bagging a wicket before a run had been scored. But the euphoria was short lived as Marc Williamson (83) took the Burton bowling attack apart including three sixes and eleven fours. By the time he was out in the 21st over the game was won with the Woodhouse score on 114. The Collins brothers Nick (36) and Brett (10) saw their side home to a very comfortable eight wicket victory in the 23rd over.

Next week Burton play host to fellow strugglers Twycross, when they will be trying to find that elusive win.
