RICHARD STENNING? TOP BLOKE!

God bless Richard Stenning for his contribution to Burton on the Wolds Cricket Club once again. Not, on this occasion, for his usual on-field acrobatics and floppy headwear, but this time for a manoeuvre befitting a club member of grand stature.

Somehow Burton's answer to Olga Korbut has managed to negotiate and £2500 contribution to the BOTWCC/ Towles Fields/ PFA Pavilion Fund.

God knows how he did it and we won't ask who he's sleeping with or if that kind of activity is worth that much, but he has at least, as one man, doubled the kitty in one go.

Bless you Rich. May your 2007 be filled with runs aplenty and bountiful with spectacular catches. Maybe even an over or two for good measure.

THE 2006 BOTWCC AGM REVIEWED

This year's AGM went as smoothly as could be expected. It was, in fact, a relatively quiet affair this year. No arguments, no disputes, disagreements or dismissals for unruly club members and the order of business was breezed through under the calming and steady hands of Barry 'The Governor' Moore. This was made slightly easier for him with Cloughie Jnr paying no attention to proceedings and watching a portable telly on the table in front of him (some second rate football team were playing, I can't remember who). Jack even brought his Mum to look after him. Bless.

As for the business itself, in the League there have been no major rule changes with the only really significant issue being that of a couple of extra teams appearing in the ranks of the Senior League. We should welcome these teams, Appleby Magna and Leuva Patidar and hope they roll over nice and quickly in the league. Rob Dunn seemed quite pleased to have the chance to play the former of the two teams having been wronged by them while batting in the distant past. Sadly, the First XI don't get to play them so he'll have to promote himself to the Seconds to get his chance. All this does mean a few extra games for the First XI though. Four more than the Seconds as it happens.

New officials were, of course, duly elected and this also went without the usual nervous shuffling of feet and uncomfortable silences, since both new team captains were already primed for the job in advance. So welcome to Rob Dunn who in his first full season with BOTWCC is now 1st XI and Club Captain. And welcome too to Rob Morley who takes over as 2nd XI skipper in only his 2nd full season. Some thanks should go to both Brian Fisher and Steve Neal for their contribution to the club in their roles as outgoing captains.

Tom Robson has finally hung up his boots after about 150 years of club officialdom. Many thanks to that man were proffered and he did get a nice warm round of applause for his efforts. No gold watch of course, he'll have to buy that himself. Finally, the outgoing 2nd XI captain Steve Neal moved in to his place as club Chairman. There were no other changes to the structure of the club. The full details can be found on the Contact page of this site.

Another key point made was that, in general, this club is quite bad at raising money. As with any organisation we need working capital to keep the club alive. Overheads are higher than you might expect and we are already preparing to spend more money than we can afford on some essential equipment, for example; a working lawn mower, which will be very expensive and certainly a necessity if you want any kind of wicket to play on. Get your heads together and lets come up with some ideas.

Steve Neal and I have been discussing the idea of a 3-way 20-20 Round Robin. BOTWCC and two other teams could pick three Sundays in the season for a 20-20 tournament to be played at each club's ground in turn. There would be three 20-20 matches on each date where we all play each other once and use the home advantage to make some money. After the three dates, 9 games will have been played and some kid of (small) trophy could be presented. There would be no teas as such, but food and drinks could be sold to raise money for the club. These could be family days for all three clubs and each club will get the chance to make a few quid. Its just an idea of course and all other suggestions would be welcome.

The 2007 tour, it was agreed, was in need of a tune up too. In the past, the event has been a bit of a damp squib and not really much of a club event. Ideas are now being mooted about how to make the May weekend more of a club thing with people being together more and enjoying a BOTWCC Social Event as it should be.

I'm sure that there is more I could say about the AGM but I can't remember what. If you were there you'll know and if you weren't, why not !

SHIPPO DOES IT AGAIN ! !

Well, it certainly is true, you really can't keep the old dog down. For the second time in just 4 years, the ailing 50-something campaigner that is John Shipman has once again been awarded the best accolade you can get in a season. With his impressive stats of 11 matches played, 28 wickets and an average of just 8.5 Shippo has been awarded the Leicestershire Senior League Bowling Award for the lowest average in the Division.

God bless him and well done for an award truly deserved.

I only mention in passing that he beat Walton's Jack Hayes to first place. Its a small success but we'll take it.

2nd Annual BOTW Bonfire Night Extravaganza

After this years Bonnie Night Do, held once again at the Pepper Farm in Burton, the magnificent sum of £1000 profit (a curiously round figure don't you think?) was collected and once again the proceeds were split between the Rainbow Hospice and The Cricket Club's Pavilion Fund.

Thanks again to all people involved in the set up, hosting and delivery of the event and, most of all, all those lovely people who bought a ticket and/or turned up at the event. Lets hope we get the same commitment and support for the 3rd Annual Do next year.

Well done all.

SECOND XI RESCHEDULED GAME NEWS

The away match against The Waltons that should have been played on the 27th of May has now been confirmed as rescheduled to Sunday the 20th of August.

This match will also be played at Towles Fields (i.e. at home) due to the unavailability of Walton's ground on that date.

Finally, as we are now nearing the end of this years campaign (sniff sniff) and the nights are now drawing in, the match will START at 1.30pm. All players should be at Towles Fields by 1.00pm

Thanks and apologies for any confusion.

2006 LEAGUE RESULTS PAGE

From and including this week this web site will show all the League Results from every Division in the Leicestershire Senior Cricket League. These results will be on a new page you can find via the menu links on the right of every page and is called 2006 LEAGUE RES

You will see that there are some matches with no results shown, this is because some teams are notoriously bad at submitting the match result to the League Fixtures and Results Secretary on a Sunday morning. There's not a lot I can do about that, but at least all results that are submitted will be shown, which is better that a slap in the face with a wet kipper isn't it?

PARTY ! PARTY ! PARTY !

July 2006 sees a landmark in the life of Burton first team supremo bowler Ian Lang.

HE'S GOING TO BE 40 ! ! (Wow, how old's that!)

Anyway, news has been filtering through the club that there is a bash being held at his house. The details of which are:

Date - Saturday 15th July (after he's finished playing of course, ahem)
Venue - Ian's and Lara's House

2 Eastcourt Road
Knighton
Leicester
LE2 3YA
Ian's mobile is 07790 886158 in case you get lost on the way, although he may not be able to speak by the time we get there, so good luck with that.

I'm not sure of a start time, so just turn up for breakfast and hang about until it all kicks off. (ONLY KIDDING, OBVIOUSLY). Ask about for the start time, someone might know.

First and Second team members are invited (even Pauline), so bring some booze and don't vomit on the carpets. Especially you young whipper-snappers. You know what its like after a couple of Campari's. It'll be carnage.

PLAYER STATS NOW ON THIS SITE NEW

Mainly for your enjoyment (god knows its not for any official reason) you will now find Second XI player statistics for the 2006 Season on this site. It will no doubt be of some interest to a very small selection of club individuals but for the rest it will be a great source of amusement.

See the link on the Menu Bar to the left called 2006 Player Stats.

These figures are manually calculated by myself so accuracy might be a problem, but a more detailed set of stats can be found on the ECB site (see Menu or Home Page for details).

WEEK FIVE - NOT A GREAT WEEK FOR BOTWCC (but it could have been worse)

It had been a respectable start to the season for both teams and the First XI have still yet to lose a game (sorry, I shouldn't have said that). But this week the club's first defeat of the season came to Steve Neal's Second XI when they managed to bugger it up in the last over with just one ball to spare. No names shall be mentioned here of course but they will be on the match report. Along with all the funny, if somewhat gripey, shenanigans throughout the match.

The First XI had slightly better fortune and managed to hold out for a Losing Draw after Walton finished 204-6. And eventually, not feeling that the target was attainable Fish instructed the lads to bat down and settled for 162-9 and a draw. I have no more details as yet but the full results will be available both on this site and the ECB site too.

Week Three Washout Blues...

A weekend of fun-packed matches for both the firsts and the second XI was scuppered quite incontrovertibly this weekend thanks to a shot of sod's law and yet another rain soaked Saturday afternoon. Sadly, this week it was too much and both games were eventually abandoned. The Firsts were apparently well on the way to victory and the Seconds didn't get the chance to WHOOP Hathern's hide.

Match reports will be available via the Fixtures Page and Reports Page as usual.

Better luck next week, at least to the First team playing a home to Bharat. Remember the Second XI match has been postponed and will be rescheduled for a Sunday game later in the year.

************************************

Week Two Results:

This week, the Burton First XI battled well against Leicester Taverners at Towles Fields but thanks to little in the way of a positive attack from the visitors, a victory was snatched from Burton by the defensive approach of the Taverners batters. However a 19 point winning draw is nothing to be sniffed at and one of those every week would probably take the league title.

And crikey! The Second XI have won again!! It appears the drop down in class suits us well. On a pitch better suited to pond-life and cud-munching quadrupeds another quality 9 wicket victory was recorded giving the 2nds a healthy 2 out of 2 for the start of the season.

See the 2006 Fixture/Results Page and its corresponding links to the Match Reports and Stats by clicking HERE.

FYI folks, I will be away all this week so the League Tables won't bet published until Friday when I get back. I'm naturally expecting a barrage of abuse for this from both the people who read this site, but stuff you, I'm off to Butlins with the boys.

************************************

Week Two - A couple of points...

Firstly, you can now find the up-to-date tables for the 2006 season on the 2006 Tables link to the left. These will be updated each week as soon as we get them (this is likely to be mid-week) and are to be supplied via the League Secretary who Ian Lang is apparently sleeping with (his words not mine).

Secondly, this weekend both teams are again in action and once more the Firsts are at home, this time to Leicester Taverners and the Seconds are away to Whetstone.

For the travelers to this ground please note that this is NOT the old GEC Whetstone pitch opposite GEC Alstrom on Cambridge Road but a different ground via a road behind GEC.

Team News: Saturday's 2nd XI are expected to be - Steve Neal (C), Mark Russell, Mike Tagg, Kelvin Creasey, Ian Merryweather (WK), Rob Morley, Shane Marshall, Grant Penton, John Shipman, Sam Shipman, and any one from three from Andy 'Sicknote' Simpkin, Alex Kimber or James Headley. This is dependant on what Brian Fisher chooses to do.

Week One- Sat 6th May 2006

Now we're all aching like hell from our first weekend of on-field league action, at least we'll have dusted off the old cob-webs and be some of the way towards the dizzy heights of total match fitness and sporting supremacy (don't laugh, you never know who's reading this).

Both the first and second's played their matches this week, despite the day being torn by horrendous rain, and the match reports can be found either via the links to the left or by clicking HERE.

Enjoy, and do keep in touch.

They're under starters orders....

AND THEY'RE OFF !

Yep, here we go folks. The new season is upon us today and its time to get stuck in to what we've got plenty of to do over the next 4 months. Winning matches!

Good luck to all players today and lets try and make it a good start to the season.

The first team are at home today and you should know where that is but for those traveling to Braunstone Cricketers in the Seconds, click HERE for a map of the location. The address is Winstanley High School, Kingsway North, Leicester, LE3 3BD

Friendly Match - BOTWCC v Woodhouse Eaves (Posted 3-5-06)UPDATED FROM ARTICLE BELOW

Thanks to Steve Neal the score book has now been retrieved from The Greyhound and a match report has been put together.

You can read this by either navigating to the Match Reports page via the links on the left or by clicking HERE.

Also, Ian Lang has signed up to the Leicestershire Senior League/ ECB web site and will be regularly updating that site with both match and player statistics. More of that will follow soon but you can see the Friendly Match Stats by clicking HERE

Okay, Lets call it a draw....(Posted 30-4-06)

Yesterday (Sat 29th April 06) saw the first on-field battle of the season between a BOTW select XI (+ a few) and Woodhouse Eaves.

I shan't bore you now with the match facts, not because I'm a complete klutz and that they're in the scorebook currently sitting behind the bar at The Greyhound, but because you can read all about it via the Match Reports page. (When I have the details that is).

Match aside, the day was most enjoyable with some hot sunshine, a pretty good pitch, lots of noisy kids and a game played in the very best of spirits.

Suffice it to say, Woodhouse played with a First XI (ish) and BOTWCC played with a healthy blend of both first and second XI members.

However, despite the might of the Woodhouse batting attack BOTWCC didn't disgrace themselves in any way and played more than respectably, even though the most preferable result wasn't achieved.

Like I said, lets call it a draw. Match Report coming soon HERE >>

And so we begin...(posted 29-4-03)

Well, here we are again, the new season beckons and all, young and old, are now full of beans, rejuvenated, eager and raring to go and have a chomp at the fabled bit that it is the glory of league success. And its all only 7 short days away.

But before that, the obligatory pre-season friendly must be undertaken by the brave few who fear no foe and crave the challenge of on-field battle.

Yes, today is the home game between BOTWCC and Woodhouse Eaves!

Its a 2pm kick off so be there early and even if you're not playing your presence would be more than welcome. Banners, pom-poms, rattles and hooter to boot.

And don't forget... BRING YOUR OWN GRUB ! !

Have it!!

Final Nets and Warm-up/Friendly Team News (posted 23-4-06)

 1. Well, no doubt thanks to our recently rejuvenated web site (one can dream) the turn-out for today's final net session of the pre-season was a good one. There were well over 20 bodies (although nobody actually counted of course) and we even made a profit on the weeks' hall rental fees. At least that helps make up for the weeks where we made stinking losses.

Thanks to all who turned out, it was a good session and quite a laugh too.

 2. More importantly, next week is the warm-up game/friendly against Woodhouse Eaves at Towles Fields (i.e. at home). Those involved should be there before 1.30pm for a 2pm start. Help is always needed setting up before a game (ropes, flags, screens etc) so get there early.

Also, there are NO TEAS for this game, so don't forget to bring your own food for the day (Lee, you can get your mum/lackey/boyfriend to do it for you).

The 17 strong squad for the game is currently ...

Ross Deabil Sam Shipman
Brian Fisher John Shipman
Steve Neal Andy Simpkin
Ian Lang Malc Hood
Ian Merryweather Richard Stenning
Pete Mitchell Graham Peck
Rob Morley Paul 'Flash' Blount
Shane Marshall Lee Smith
Grant Penton

The lucky XI will be contacted and selected this week and we hope to see the rest of you there for the support anyway.

See you next week and be prepared to give Woodhouse a sound whoopin'.

LAST NET SESSION SUNDAY 23RD APRIL 2006 (posted 20-4-06)

Okay boys and girls, this coming weekend sees the final nets session of the season.

It would not only be great to see people turn up but on a slightly less fluffy note, it will probably make the first game just that little bit easier for you come the 6th of May.

So please do come along to Roundhill Community College this Sunday between 12 and 1pm and get those muscles working.

************************************

Ground Force 2006 (No Charlie Dimmock though) (Posted 12-4-06)

Many thanks to all those who turned up on Saturday 8 April for the Ground Hog Work day (see article below). Those who managed to get their bums out of bed were the Neal family, the Shipmans (minus Bridget who was packing suitcases) Ian Lang and Brian Fisher. The usual suspects, as it happens.

All the jobs were done except for the roof on the garage and the back of the sight-screen which still needs painting. Graham where were you?

It was reportedly an enjoyable and worthwhile exercise that was well done by all. Thanks again.

************************************

Pre-Season Friendly - April 29th 2006 (UPDATED)

The weekend before the start of the season proper BOTWCC are hosting a pre-season 'friendly' (yeah, like they exist) against Woodhouse Eaves. This years it is to be played at Towles Fields on Saturday the 29th April and starts at 2.00pm.

Please contact Brian Fisher or Steve Neal if you would like to have a bit of a run-out before it all kicks off in the league.

If the numbers are sufficient a second game may be played on the following day, Sunday 30th April.

P.S. They beat us in last years pre-season match at their place, so vengeance will be ours! Bring it on Markley and Cloughie....

************************************

Pre-Season Ground Work (Posted 05-04-06)

This coming Saturday morning on the 8th April 2006 members will be meeting at Towles Fields to help prepare the ground for the forthcoming season. This is likely to involve painting the site screens, tidying up the outdoor net, putting new boards around the garage and maybe one or two other little jobs that need jobbing.

Anybody free to help out should pop along to the ground and muck in. All help would be gratefully appreciated and you'll feel much better about yourself for taking part.

************************************

Match Subscriptions and Availability (Posted 1-4-06)

For those who were not able to attend the AGM (Annual General Meeting) please note that this season the match subscriptions have been increased to the following:

Adult Members - £10 per match
Junior members - £5 per match

If you have been unable to attend any of the pre-season functions and nets, Steve Neal or Brian Fisher will be in contact with you to check on your availability for the season. If you know that your availability will differ from last season then please contact your team skipper ASAP.

************************************

The Ground Work (Posted 30-3-06)

Wednesday 29th of March saw two of the club's most senior members, Eddie Blount and Tom Robson (the Club's Secretary and El Presidentay no less) perform their annual rolling session of the entire outfield at Towles Fields. It was apparently a painful and arduous task but thankfully nobody got hurt in the incident.

And although it did take them all day to do it, it is a task that is much appreciated by the playing members. We hope that thanks to their efforts and those of others (Steve and Rob thus far) the standard of the outfield and ground preparation in general will reduce the chances of people getting hurt from either unpredictable bounces or flamboyant diving attempts (Richard Stenning will usually get a pair of tens for his in-flight antics).

Any help from other members would be appreciated, just call Steve Neal via the numbers on the Contact page.

Thanks again gents.

************************************

Pre-Season Nets

As you will all be aware from the previous circular sent out by Brian Fisher (and below on this page) the club are currently holding net sessions at Roundhill Community College on Sunday lunchtimes between 12 and 1pm.

There are only 3 sessions left on Sunday 2nd, 9th and 23rd of April. If you have not yet been to a net then please make every effort to attend. (It would be nice to see some 1st team faces as there has only been 2 attend so far!)

The Bonfire Night Extravaganza - November 5th 2005 (Posted 28-3-06)

For those of you who knew nothing of this (and you must be clinically dead to have missed it, but having seen the batting and bowling stats, you might well have been) last year on Bonfire Night BOTWCC organised a Food and Firework Event in the village to help raise funds for both the cricket club and The Rainbow Hospice.

Despite the howling winds and bitterly cold driving rain that had people cowering for cover, the evening was a rip-roaring success. The attendances were much higher than expected, the fireworks went off as planned and nobody suffered food poisoning, which is all good.

It was so good in fact that the event made over £1200 in profit with was split between the Clubhouse Development Fund and The Rainbow Hospice.

For those who made the night such a winner, special thanks go to the Pepper Family for allowing us to use their grounds for the event (God knows there must have been a right royal mess to clear up). Also many thanks to Tracey and Steve Neal, Eddie Blount, The Shipmans, Mike Tagg and many more who all played a part in both setting up and running the event. A small mention must also go to those who pre-cooked the jacket spuds for the event. Its a small task but without them, things wouldn't have been the same.

Its not certain at this stage whether this will become an annual event, but with the profitable funds raised and the evening's obvious success, it certainly gives room for thought when considering other events in the future.

Thanks again to all for both your help and attendance.
